Gear Up For Dolphins Football

A Huge Dolphins Ginn…I Mean Win

Miami Dolphins v New York Jets

It’s a good thing that I’m not a betting man because I would have lost a lot of money today.  Well, not really, because I don’t have that much money to lose in the first place.  No, I wouldn’t have bet against the Dolphins, but I would have bet against: 1) Ginn returning one kick for a touchdown (two is just flabbergasting) 2) The Dolphins rushing for 52 total yards 3) Three non-offensive touchdowns 4) Three straight 30+ point games and 5) Mark Sanchez looking like Vinnie Testaverde for most of the second half.

I’ll admit I was on the “I wouldn’t mind giving Ginn away for 2 nickels and a slice of cheese bandwagon” after last week.  For the first time in…ever…Ted Ginn showed why he was a high first round draft pick.  People may say, “Remember that catch versus the Jets a few weeks ago or this play or that play?”  I would respond by saying, “Any wide receiver/returner draft pick in any round should catch a few balls and make a few plays, but a first rounder should influence games, scare defenses, or in this case, make special teams relevant in a huge divisional game.”  Just when I thought he had developed better route running, but lost his hands and returning abilities, he shows that he can not only outrun opposing units, but make people miss and accelerate as well.  A few less dropped balls and we could see a whole new player emerge.

Besides Ginn’s record breaking returns the only other noteworthy happening in this game for Miami was the defense’s end of 4th quarter stand.  The offense was basically non-existent except for a crucial 4th quarter drive for a touchdown.  The defense played well, but was noticeably slow and missing tackles after the Jets owned the ball for a vast majority of the third quarter.   They bent, but didn’t break late in the 4th quarter letting the Jets get inside the 10 yard line before making a stand.

Miami Dolphins vs Buffalo Bills

For all those Jets fans who will say, “We dominated this game…the Dolphins were lucky.”  I must note that win or lose, special teams is a part of the game.  So often we hype offense and defense, but the kicking/return game oftentimes means the difference between winning and losing.  We saw today that the Jets won on offense and defense.  How did they lose?  They lost to the Miami special teams unit.

I'm really surprised by the 52 rushing yards. Although the Dolphins started slow, i think a lot of people forget that they made the playoffs last year, and that good teams find ways to win. They knew it was a huge divisional game and found a way to get the win... I wouldn't be surprised to see a late season surge by Miami. But, then again, who knows. The NFL is surprising every single week.
